Albert’s Goal and Celebration

MARSEILLE, France — Korbin Albert stunning goal on Wednesday night was a highlight, but the celebration that followed was equally significant.

Albert’s powerful strike from about 25 yards out secured a 2-1 victory for the U.S. women’s national team against Australia. The 20-year-old Paris Saint-Germain midfielder celebrated her first international goal with her teammates, who surrounded her in a jubilant embrace on the field of the Velodrome Stadium. This moment was especially meaningful for Albert, who had recently apologized for sharing anti-LGBTQIA+ content on social media.

Albert Reflects on Her Goal

Reflecting on her goal, Albert confessed, “I actually closed my eyes and then I opened them, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, it went in.'” She added, “You’ve always dreamed of having those types of goals, and when you come to this level and you just do that thing that you dreamed about, it just feels very rewarding.”

Coach Emma Hayes’ Support

New coach Emma Hayes has been a key figure in helping Albert regain her standing with the team through a mix of support and “tough love.” Hayes commented, “We all know that she’s been through a lot with her actions and she’s someone who is truly sorry for what she’s done. I’m a mother and my instinct is to protect, and I’m never ever going to change that, but I don’t tolerate [that], and we want an environment where people can feel they can be their self.”

Albert’s Growth and Team Integration

Hayes noted that Albert has had to mature significantly. She believes Albert can be a crucial player for the USWNT and has integrated her into all three group stage games, dedicating time in training sessions to show Albert how she can contribute to the team’s success. Albert’s aggressive style was on full display with her long-range shot against Australia, which rocketed into the top corner of the net.

Teammate Reactions

U.S. captain Lindsey Horan, who witnessed the goal up close, remarked, “I think when the ball leaves a foot like that and the spin is on it and the way she hit it, you just knew it was going in the back of the net. I’m so proud of her, such a cool moment for her.”

Ongoing Growth and Future Prospects

While the team’s joy in that moment was palpable, Hayes emphasized that Albert’s journey towards personal growth and better team integration is ongoing. Moments like these, along with sincere efforts off the field, are crucial to this process.

Albert expressed her gratitude towards Hayes, saying, “She reminds me a lot of my mom. It’s really nice just to have her here and just teaching me and guiding me in every way — personally and on the soccer field. It’s really inspiring.”

Upcoming Match

After topping Group B with a perfect nine points, the U.S. will face Japan in the Olympic quarterfinals on Saturday.
