Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Tehran, Group Confirms
2 min readThe Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed on Wednesday that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran. Haniyeh and one of his guards reportedly died at his Tehran residence. Haniyeh had been directing Hamas’ political activities from exile in Qatar.
The IRGC’s statement indicated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. “Early this morning, Ismail Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran was hit, leading to his and one of his bodyguards’ deaths. The cause is being investigated and will be announced soon,” the Revolutionary Guards stated.
The statement also extended condolences to the Palestinian people, the Muslim community, and the fighters of the Resistance Front over Haniyeh’s death.
In a separate statement, Hamas claimed that Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike on his Tehran residence, describing it as a “treacherous Zionist raid.”

The residence of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of Hamas Islamic Resistance, was struck in Tehran, according to a statement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Sepah news website. The statement added that one of Haniyeh’s bodyguards was also killed. “The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” it noted.
Hamas Response and Al Jazeera Reports
In a separate statement, Hamas said Haniyeh was killed after attending the inauguration of the new Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian. Hamas attributed Haniyeh’s death to “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran,” according to Al Jazeera.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri declared that the group would wage “open war to liberate Jerusalem” and is “ready to pay various prices” to achieve this goal, as reported by Al Jazeera, quoting local media. Al Jazeera’s correspondent Hani Mahmoud reported from Deir el-Balah in Gaza that the news is resonating very negatively there.
