IND vs SA: Smriti Mandhana Becomes First Indian Woman to Hit Back-to-Back ODI Centuries, Equals Mithali Raj’s Record
2 min readSmriti Mandhana made history by becoming the first Indian woman to score two consecutive ODI centuries during the second ODI against South Africa at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Building on her impressive 117 in the previous ODI against the Proteas—the highest score by an Indian woman on home soil—Mandhana spearheaded India’s batting after South Africa chose to bowl. She achieved her second century of the series with a 103-ball performance, featuring 12 fours and two sixes.
With this innings, Mandhana equaled Mithali Raj’s record for the most ODI centuries by an Indian woman, reaching her seventh ton in the format. She formed solid partnerships with Shafali Verma and Dayalan Hemalatha before accelerating the scoring with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for the third wicket. Joining forces at 100 for two in 23 overs, the pair doubled the score in the next 17 overs.
With this innings, Mandhana became the first Indian woman to score back-to-back centuries in ODIs and only the second overall, following Sandhya Agarwal’s consecutive centuries in a Test series against England in 1986. This achievement also allowed her to equal former India captain Mithali Raj’s record for the most ODI centuries by an Indian woman, with both players now having seven centuries each. They are tied for 10th place on the all-time list, which is topped by former Australia captain Meg Lanning with 15 centuries. Among openers, Mandhana is now joint third, trailing New Zealand’s Suzie Bates (12) and England’s Tammy Beaumont and Charlotte Edwards (both with 9).
