CAS Defers Verdict on Vinesh Phogat’s Joint Silver Medal Appeal
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has delayed its decision regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics. The verdict is now expected on August 13.
Vidushpat Singhania, legal counsel for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), confirmed the postponement to CNN News18, stating that the deadline for submitting additional documents was extended until August 11, with the final decision to follow on August 13.
Singhania praised Vinesh’s efforts at the Olympics, emphasizing that their legal efforts were minor compared to her achievements on the mat. However, he remained tight-lipped about the legal strategy but expressed optimism for a favorable outcome.
Vinesh Phogat’s Heartbreaking Disqualification
Vinesh Phogat faced heartbreak when she was disqualified from the women’s freestyle 50kg event after being found 100 grams over the weight limit on the day of her gold medal match. This disqualification not only stripped her of a chance to compete for gold but also cost her the guaranteed silver medal for reaching the final.
Following this incident, a distraught Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling. The 29-year-old had shown remarkable performance leading up to the final, defeating reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki, former European champion Oksana Livach, and Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman.
IOA and CAS’s Next Steps
With Guzman advancing to the final and ultimately losing to Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA, the CAS had initially indicated that a decision would be reached by Saturday evening. However, the deadline was extended by 24 hours, with a final ruling expected on August 13.
The IOA remains hopeful for a positive outcome in Vinesh Phogat’s case, emphasizing its commitment to seeking a resolution in her favor. Vinesh is being represented by senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania in this legal battle.
IOC President’s Perspective
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach commented on the situation, expressing some sympathy for Vinesh Phogat but also raised questions about where the line should be drawn when allowing exceptions in such scenarios.
Bach questioned the implications of granting concessions based on minor infractions, such as a 100-gram weight difference, and how such decisions might impact other sports where fractions of a second determine outcomes.
